The novel is about the legendary pilgrimage of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Tripitaka, who traveled to the "Western Regions" to obtain Buddhist sacred texts. During the journey, he has three disciples to protect and help him, who are Monkey King, Pigsy, and Sandy. They are the group of pilgrims towards enlightenment by the power and virtue of cooperation.
